Visas and Requirements: Your Malaysia Study Journey
An admission offer, a Visa Approval Letter and a Student Pass serve different purposes. Use this guide to understand the order of the process and what to arrange at each stage.
The quick answer
For a new higher-education application, start with an offer and the institution’s international office. Immigration states that applicants must be outside Malaysia when submitting. Obtain the required approvals before arranging your journey.
Understand the three key documents

From offer to Student Pass
- Confirm your offer.
Agree on the degree, campus, intake and conditions. Ask which office will submit and monitor the application.
- Prepare and submit.
Follow the institution’s instructions and supply the required documents. Keep the application reference and a copy of your payment record.
- Track the application.
Check the EMGS status and respond to requests for corrections through your institution. Record what was requested and when it was resubmitted.
- Check eVAL and entry requirements.
After eVAL approval, visa-required nationals must follow Immigration’s official eVISA route for a Single Entry Visa. Confirm the current nationality rules before travel.
- Prepare your arrival.
Confirm the institution’s arrival instructions, airport arrangements, accommodation and documents to carry in hand luggage.
- Complete screening and endorsement.
EMGS requires new students to attend a panel-clinic screening within 7 working days of arrival. Coordinate the Student Pass endorsement with your international office.

How long does a Malaysia student visa take?
A processing target is not a guaranteed date for your own case. Document corrections, institutional checks, immigration review and entry-visa arrangements are separate steps. Ask your institution for a latest recommended submission date and the options if approval arrives after enrolment begins.
If progress stops, send the international office your application reference, current status and the exact message asking for action. Ask whether the next step belongs to you, the institution or the reviewing authority.
What should your visa budget include?
Use the EMGS: application fee calculator with your own application details and compare it with an itemised university invoice. Ask which processing, immigration, medical, insurance and institutional charges are included, and whether a refundable bond is separate. Do not treat a single advertised processing fee as the complete arrival budget.
Questions students ask
Can I enter as a tourist and assume I can change to a Student Pass?
Do not plan your studies on that assumption. Follow the new-student application route and obtain written guidance from your institution for any existing immigration status.
Does a university offer guarantee a visa?
No. Admission and immigration approval are separate decisions. Complete the application accurately and use the official status channel for updates.
